Just jam the current channels, broadcast your spoofed MAC address on a clear channel, and your iPod touch will do a quick bit of teleporting. Toss in some GSM or WiFi jamming equipment, and you can fake out an iPhone or iPod touch even in the presence of other networks.

iPhones were a bit harder to spoof, since they also do a bit of GSM triangulation from cell towers, but the team was still able to spoof a location 1km away with relative ease. In the test, the team faked locations roughly 1km and 6,500km away from the unit's location, which the iPod dutifully reported as its 'real' location. First of all, with no other WiFi networks nearby, an iPod touch can be convinced that it's anywhere in the world depending on which access point you're spoofing. Using a few laptops, some WiFi MAC address databases, and Google Earth, the team was able to spoof locations in a variety of ways. In particular, the team of four computer scientists from ETH Zurich is concerned about just how easy it is to 'spoof' an iPhone's location, making the device think it is somewhere else. Unfortunately, researchers are now voicing a few concerns of their own about the security and reliability of the Skyhook system. Apple added Skyhook's WiFi Positioning system to the iPhone in January, though, and quieted many consumer concerns.
